What it is

Every technological revolution has a visible face and a hidden body. The visible face of this one is a chat window: a cursor, a question, an answer that arrives in seconds. The hidden body is made of quartz and copper, of machines that print circuits with light, of factories on a single island, of electricians on scaffolding, of transformers, cooling loops, and rivers. I wrote this book because the conversation about artificial intelligence has been almost entirely about the face. We argue about which model is smarter, which company is ahead, which job will disappear next. Far fewer of us ask the question that, in the end, may decide the answer to all the others: who controls the physical things that intelligence runs on? The title of this book is deliberately blunt. “Danger” is not a prediction of catastrophe, and it is not a slogan against technology. I use AI every day, and this book belongs to that same ecosystem of tools and ideas. “Danger” is a flag planted where the terrain is narrowest: the points at which an entire industry depends on one supplier, one region, one grid connection, or one scarce kind of skill. A system is only as strong as its tightest bottleneck, and the AI economy has several. Two forces run through every chapter. The first is monopoly — and, just as importantly, its disruption. A handful of companies sit at chokepoints that no one else can presently replace, and history suggests that chokepoints attract challengers, regulators, rivals, and substitutes. The second is energy. Intelligence at scale is, physically, a question of electricity, and electricity is a question of generation, transmission, materials, and people. Together they explain why I believe that monopoly disruption and energy are the name of the game on the road to superintelligence.
