The Illustrator of Arcliffe

She came to Arcliffe to stop. The town had other ideas.

For eighteen years, Clara Whitfield drew for a living. Her fox in a green waistcoat filled bedtime stories across the country. Then the deadlines tightened, her publisher wanted “something more commercial,” and one morning the page simply stayed blank.

Arcliffe was meant to be temporary. A rented cottage on Hawthorn Lane. Somewhere quiet enough to stop.

But in Arcliffe, people notice.

Ros at The Crossed Keys notices the way Clara looks at a picture book, like a house she used to live in. Dot from two doors up notices everything. And Sophie Patel, who runs the craft shop on the square, notices the woman standing outside her window for far too long. She gives her a sketchbook that opens flat, a free pencil, and permission not to draw anything at all.

Then the town decides it needs a poster for its very first book festival.

A line on a page. A back room with north light. A walk along the canal, and an umbrella in the rain.

But Sophie has spent six years watching people come to Arcliffe broken, get better, and leave. When London comes calling with the offer of a lifetime, Clara has to decide what she really wants to draw, and who she wants to draw it for.

A warm, gentle sapphic romance about creative burnout, found family, and finding the courage to stay.
