The Mother I Did Not Know

A therapist with a shattered past opens the wrong door, and the truth walks in wearing a familiar face.

In Santa Fe's high desert, Dr. Mari Vega keeps her casita locked and her heart locked tighter. Once celebrated for reading dangerous men, a malpractice scandal cost her the paper she published, the practice she built, and the daughter who won't say her name.

Now a single week brings three patients and a storm that won't let up. Ines, a woman certain a silent stalker measures time in decades and slips into rooms without leaving a mark. Cordelia, a polished widow who wants to learn to see people the way they really are, even if that means asking whether a fall from a bell tower was helped by a hand. And Owen, a charming executive whose poise never breaks, until half a second of a wrong vowel turns his accent into a mask.

As session notes blur into midnight confessions, edited tapes surface, an old detective knocks, and Mari's estranged daughter sets a sealed folder on a kitchen chair like a lit fuse. Her curandera friend says a man has changed his face. The past isn't past. It's patient.

When the box labeled ASHBY (CLOSED) finally opens, and the desert answers a question four generations refused to ask, Mari has to decide which door to guard: the one that protects her reputation, or the one that saves the women who still come to her for shelter.

Told through clinical files and off-the-record reckonings, The Mother I Did Not Know is intimate psychological suspense for readers who love fiercely drawn women and secrets unearthed by candlelight, where waiting is never just waiting, and every note in the file is a promise that someone is coming to the door.

Perfect for fans of Tana French, Paula Hawkins, and Celeste Ng.
