Love Is Good Religion

We bring a lot with us when reading the Bible. Trey Ferguson asks us to read it again through the lens of love—not as mere sentiment, but as a commitment to wholeness.

In Love Is Good Religion: A 30-Day Journey to Compassion, Contemplation, and Connection, pastor and public theologian Trey Ferguson cuts through our overfamiliarity and invites us to reread scripture in light of its persistent call to love, liberation, community, and human wholeness.

Across thirty readings of his distinctive New Living Treyslation and deeply personal commentary, Trey argues that the first thing God calls “not good” is human isolation. He explores John 3:16 not as a message about saving the unworthy but as a declaration of God-affirmed value. He also encounters Hagar from the underside of power, finding hope in an enslaved woman who names “the God who sees me.”

What emerges is a different way of understanding love itself. Love is more than kindness, sentiment, or personal virtue: it is a commitment to wholeness—our own, our neighbors’, and all of creation. And it’s not a zero-sum game. In a culture that so often legitimizes division, hierarchy, and conformity, Trey asks us to turn toward compassion, contemplation, and connection.

Personal, affecting, and grounded, Love Is Good Religion is an invitation to discover a faith that draws us more deeply toward God, one another, and a more whole world.
