The Field Mouse Family and the League of Small Voices

In the meadow of Alderfen, the smallest creatures survive by staying unnoticed. Field mice gather fallen grain, beetles carry crumbs beneath leaves, shrews tunnel between roots, sparrows glean seeds from the hedges, and frogs keep to the cool banks of the reed pond. For years, they have accepted the same bitter rule: whenever Bront, a broad-shouldered badger with a talent for intimidation, demands food, paths, or shelter, each species gives in alone.

The Hearthseed field mouse family—patient mother Mira, inventive father Rowan, observant daughter Leni, impulsive son Pip, and Grandmother Sedge—begins to question why so many small creatures remain powerless when they greatly outnumber the bully who frightens them. Instead of planning revenge, they build trust one conversation at a time. They learn each neighbor’s strength, create signals across the meadow, and design a defense that depends on cooperation rather than force.

But unity proves harder than courage. Old arguments, pride, fear, and Bront’s deliberate lies threaten to split the alliance before it can act. The family must show that a community becomes strong not when every member fights in the same way, but when every member’s different gift is respected. This continuous fable is about solidarity, practical intelligence, shared risk, and the truth that bullies grow powerful when the vulnerable are kept separate.
